Hazard identification and Risk Assessment
Hazard identification is the process used to evaluate if any particular situation, item, thing, etc., may have the potential to cause harm. The term usually used to define the entire process is risk assessment.
Assessment Onboard Exam
Hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA) study is the systematic approach to assessing hazards and their related risks, which helps in deriving objective measures of recognizing the hazards and implementing the techniques that could help in managing the risks.
What is the purpose of the HIRA Study?
- Recognizing all those contributors that can impact injuries to workers
- Determining the opportunities for the happening of incidents and evaluating their severities.
- Identification of controls and safety measures in the existing system
- Recommendation of controlling measures that could effectively manage the possibilities of hazards.

Risk Assessment Methodology
Risk Assessment Methodology is a unique process intended for risk management and improving safety in various types of industries. This methodology helps in obtaining a quantitative assessment of potential risks and determining whether the levels of risks are acceptable. For those risks that are unacceptable, the process will include assessments and recommendations for risk control measures.
Hazard Identification Study (HAZID) is a structured and documented method to identify and analyze hazards in the workplace. The purpose of this systematic assessment is to gain insights based on the recognition of hazards and find out the adverse effects when exposed to a hazard and also provide recommendations for mitigating risks. This is divided into four major sections that in turn include various categories. The common categories are:
Section 1: External and Environmental Hazard;
Section 2: Facility Hazards;
Section 3: Health Hazards and
Section 4: Assess Risks to:
- Asset /Production
The identified and known hazards are sorted and evaluated within the risk matrix in order to realize the risk importance, based on the ranking of risks safeguarding measures will be provided and finally, suggestions will be given out which will help in avoiding the potential hazards.
Outcomes of the learning
- To gain an understanding of each and every severe injury or incident has its own risk behaviors and unidentified hazards which have contributed to the incident.
- Determine the purpose of a hazard and know the methods to identify risks in the workplace.
- Define the strategies which help in eliminating or controlling the hazards in the workplace.
- Accomplish a job hazard analysis as the task of a common work.

A series of reasonable steps taken to eliminate or control the injuries, effects of the unintentional fall while assessing the work at height.
But there are different types of falls that we must consider obviously, i.e.
- Fall at the same level, within the surface
- fall to a lower level from the height
Falls from roofs and height, in general, are the most common cause of workplace death, according to the Health & Safety Executive. The worrying aspect of this is that these deaths are primarily caused by a failure to assess or recognize fragile work surfaces properly.
