Fire extinguishers are essential tools to protect people and assets during a fire incident or accident. However, using the right extinguisher is important to put out the fire, else the wrong choice may make the situation worse and increase the risk to the lives of people and damage to the property.
What is a Fire Extinguisher?
A fire extinguisher is a portable and movable fire safety system useful to put out or control minor fires, mostly during emergency cases. A typical fire extinguisher contains a hand-held cylindrical pressure vessel that comprises an agent that is discharged to deprive the oxygen, cool down the material and extinguish the fire.
Types of Fire Extinguishers
There are 5 major types of fire extinguishers. They are:

Foam Extinguishers
This type of extinguisher is rated for Class A and Class B fires. The label colour of these kinds of extinguishers is Cream.
Useful for:
- Buildings where flammable liquids are stored. This includes schools, office buildings, hospitals, apartments, shops and more.
Not ideal for:
- Electrical fires.
Carbon dioxide Extinguishers
These fire extinguishers are identified with the label colour black, and contain incombustible carbon dioxide gas and are best for Class B and C fire types.
Best for:
- Electrical fires and fires that involve flammable liquids like petrol.
Not suitable for:
- Fires involving paper or textiles and flammable metals
- Kitchen fires
Water Extinguishers
Filled with deionized water is a non-toxic and non-conductive spray, these extinguishers are suitable for Class A and Class C fires. They have the label colour of red.
Best for:
- Fires involving organic materials
Not suited for:
- Fires due to electronic equipment
- Kitchen fires
- Fires caused by flammable liquids or gas
Wet chemical Extinguishers
Specifically designed to tackle kitchen and oil fires, these extinguishers contain a potassium solution to cool the fire and they are labelled in yellow colour.
Best for:
- Fires involving cooking oils and fats
Not ideal for:
- Fires caused by flammable liquids, gases and electrical fires.
